Access and Barriers

Manipulated fire escape doors in south-eastern Husby break down the barrier between private, semi-private and public spaces, allowing quicker access and circulation, but at the same time creating risks for tennants.

Through the use of small items, like rocks, sticks, chewing gum and other items; people have made the existing fireescapes into points of access and rooms of leasure.

Some tennants complain that the stairwells are being used for antisocial gatherings, with alcohol, drugs and general loiteirng.
The manipulated doors and spaces of the fire escape routes lead to three main problems for the tenants.

1: This pose a serous risk to life as the integrity of the emergency escape routes are vital in the case of an emergency.

2: The use of these now accessible spaces are being used by unwanted people who tenants describe as trouble makers.

3: These manipulations erode the successive barriers of increasing privacy for the homes and altering percieved ownership.
Fires are not uncommon for Husby, and in combination with buildings accessible to outsiders, the storage of flamable equipment like furniture and rugs stored on the exterior walkways, creates a recipie for disaster.

This becomes especially worrying, when theese same systems ow walkways and fireescapes can not guarantee their function. Bicycles and rubbish blocking the paths and doors jammed or manipulated.
