Architectures of Governance is a Master’s architecture studio at KTH exploring how architecture operates within — and can intervene in — the systems that govern the built environment. The studio brings architectural practice into direct contact with questions of housing, ownership, regulation, maintenance, public responsibility and the everyday consequences of how our cities are governed.
During the autumn, the studio has been working through Architecture as Witness, investigating contemporary cases of housing neglect and contested property management across Stockholm. Studio members have been using the tools of architectural practice — surveys, drawings, models, photography, mapping, interviews and documentary research — to examine buildings not simply as objects, but as material witnesses to wider systems of ownership, regulation, care and neglect. The event at Färgfabriken will bring together studio members, architects, researchers, public authorities, housing organisations and others working within and around these questions.
Through presentations, discussion and the studio’s ongoing work, we want to open a conversation around what architecture can contribute when existing systems cease to function as intended.
